The Welding Engineer will be responsible for overseeing welding engineering, fabrication quality, and metallurgical compliance across all FPSO capital projects managed out of our Shanghai office. Sitting at the intersection of engineering design, classification standards, and shipyard/vendor execution in China, you will ensure all structural, piping, topsides, and subsea welding operations meet strict offshore industry codes, client specifications, and class society rules (e.g., ABS, DNV, BV).
Key Responsibilities
- Review and approve Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS), Procedure Qualification Records (PQR), and Welder Performance Qualifications (WPQ) submitted by EPC contractors, shipyards, and equipment vendors.
- Ensure full compliance with relevant offshore codes and standards, including ASME IX, AWS D1.1, API 1104, ISO 15614, and Class Society Rules (ABS/DNV).
- Evaluate joint configurations, material selections (including high-strength steels, duplex stainless steels, and nickel alloys), and post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) requirements.
- Conduct technical audits and surveillance at shipyards, fabrication yards, and vendor facilities across China during the construction, conversion, and assembly of FPSO hulls and topside modules.
- Perform technical evaluations during supplier pre-qualification and tender reviews for critical welded components (pressure vessels, piping spools, structural modules, subsea equipment).
- Act as the primary technical point of contact between Yinson’s project team, shipyard welding teams, independent third-party inspection agencies (TPA), and Class surveyors.
- Review Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) plans, procedures, and results (UT, RT, MPI, DPI, PAUT) to identify defect trends and verify structural integrity.
- Lead root-cause failure analyses (RCA) on critical weld defects or fabrication non-conformances (NCRs) and define corrective/preventive action plans.
- Minimize weld repair rates and cycle times through continuous optimization of welding parameters and automation adoption at fabrication sites.
- Support the Project Quality Manager and Lead Structural/Piping Engineers during front-end design, detail engineering, and construction phases.
- Maintain complete, audit-ready welding engineering documentation, traceability records, and close-out reports.
- Enforce Yinson’s strict Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) standards across all fabrication site activities.
Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Welding Engineering, Metallurgy, Materials Science, or Mechanical Engineering.
- Recognized Professional Certification: International Welding Engineer (IWE/EWE), AWS Certified Welding Engineer (CWEng), or CSWIP 3.1/3.2 Senior Welding Inspector is required.
- Minimum 5–8 years of direct welding engineering experience within the Oil & Gas / Offshore Energy sector, specifically on FPSO, FSO, FLNG, or offshore jacket/topside construction projects.
- Hands-on experience working with Chinese shipyards (e.g., SWS, COSCO, Merchants Marine) and major Chinese fabrication yards.
- Deep technical knowledge of welding processes (GTAW, SMAW, FCAW, SAW, GMAW), manual and automated welding systems, and metallurgical phenomena (e.g., hydrogen-induced cracking, PWHT, HAZ toughness).
- Thorough understanding of international offshore codes (ASME B31.3 / Sec VIII / Sec IX, AWS D1.1, API 2Z/1104, NACE MR0175) and Class rules (DNV-OS-C401, ABS).
- Problem-Solving: Proven track record in troubleshooting complex metallurgical or weld-defect issues under tight project deadlines.
- Mobility: Willingness to travel frequently to shipyards and vendor facilities across China and Southeast Asia as required by project milestones.
