Recommended qualifications:
There are several qualifications that can help prospective Service Engineers get into a job. They can pursue a HNC, HND, BTEC, or NVQ certifications in several areas. These include Mechanical, Electrical and/or Hydraulic Engineering.
ONC, Scotvec or City Guilds Certificate in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent
Completion of parts 3 & 4 of DoE guidance Note 5
Crane Operator Training including theoretical and practical assessment
C1 Driving License
Recommended experience:
Minimum 1 year experience in marine crane environment
Minimum 2 years’ experience as offshore crane operator on appropriate drilling unit or fixed installation, servicing operations, offshore preferably with experience of hook-up and commissioning
Good knowledge of working with lifting equipment and techniques used
Supervisory experience
Knowledge of offshore cranes
Experience in writing detailed mechanical/hydraulic inspection report
Experience in troubleshooting problems with mechanical and hydraulic equipment and systems

3. General
The Service Engineers often visit client or remote locations to resolve or perform service/maintenance/inspections/repair functions. They assess, install and fix equipment or machinery.
The Service Engineer must be able to demonstrate strong crane related mechatronic knowledge and maintain high technical level of product knowledge. The Service Engineer must be team oriented and flexible, and actively seek to share information and assist his or her peers.
4. Job Responsibilities
Responsible to the Service Manager for all activities undertaken for ALATAS
Efficient and safe operation and maintenance of cranes and other lifting/hoisting gear. Offloading and back loading of supplies and equipment. Supervision and provision of assistance to those assigned to the crane operator by the operations team leader and be familiar with lifting and slinging practices and techniques.
Fully responsible to the Service Manager or Service Coordinator for ensuring that all final verifications specified in Works Instructions, Scope of Works, verbal communications and ALATAS specifications are carried out and completed.
Liaises with the Service Manager or Service Coordinator to ensure that components, material and/or equipment as necessary is inspected and is correct to specifications or as required and ensure, where applicable, that they are delivered in a timely manner to ensure client/ALATAS delivery programs are achieved.
Liaises with the Service Manager or Service Coordinator and Client representatives or the Certifying Authority to carry out repairs, testing and acceptance of the equipment in accordance with their specified requirements.
Liaises with the Service Manager or Service Coordinator to arrange final testing and dates in order to secure contract delivery requirements.
Ensures that all work carried out for ALATAS is backed up with completed written reports fully describing all activities undertaken on a daily basis and explaining in detail recommendations including any parts or materials required to satisfactorily complete the work.
Ensures that all work carried out for ALATAS is backed up with correctly completed timesheets with approval signature by the client representative confirming all hours/activities undertaken and submits the timesheets to the Service Manager or Service Coordinator.
Acts as a focal point for corrective actions for non-conformance’s detected during any work activities undertaken.
Ensures that during time worked away from ALATAS premises the Service Coordinator is kept fully informed of all work activities to be able to answer any questions to the Service Manager or Client which they may have regarding work being carried out.
Informs the Service Manager or Service Coordinator of any non-conformance in Work Instructions, Scope of Works, verbal communications with regard to work carried out and shall review amended Work instructions, Scope of Works or verbal communications ensuring they are satisfactory to specifications.
Ensures that all work carried out for ALATAS is done in a professional, safe and economical manner to meet ALATAS specifications/standard and our Client specifications/standard.
Liaises with other technicians to ensure the work progresses as mentioned in responsible clause 11 above.
Ensures that all measuring and testing equipment is properly used and has a valid certificate of calibration/test.
Ensures that all relevant safety measures and the correct use of personal protective/safety equipment is in place when carrying out work for ALATAS
When requested to do so, attends ALTAS and Client meetings, such as Worksite, Quality review and safety meetings.
When requested to do so, be able to work overtime, nightshift work, weekends, onshore and offshore.
When requested to do so, be able to work in Foreign Countries with similar responsibilities to clause 16 above.
When requested to do so, be able to depart/attend work at short notice.
When requested to do so, be able to attend any training course/session that ALATAS or the Client wish you to take, i.e. statutory, technical or specialist training.
When requested to do so, adhere to Client Permit to Work and Safety Systems.
When requested to do so, participate in all Safety Drills, Fire and Boat Drills and any other programs called for by the Client.
Maintain and ensure security of all ALATAS equipment and tooling at all times.
Inform Line Manager of any damage to or loss of any of the ALATAS equipment or tooling immediately.
Perform periodic maintenance, repair and overhaul of mechanically/hydraulic and pneumatic equipment as directed.
Understand all ALATAS Safety, Quality and Incident Reporting procedures.
When required to do so, be able to carry out reporting of incidents according to ALATAS incident reporting procedures.
To act as installation Helicopter Landing Officer if called upon.
Contribute to ensure Certificate of Fitness is maintained.
Contribute to ensuring charts standards are achieved and maintained.
Participate in Emergency Response Team.
Ensure a safe and comprehensive shift and crew change handover takes place, maintaining a clear and informative handover back at the end of shift/tour for use by relief.
Reporting any defects or discrepancies that are of a complex nature.
Liaise with respective Team Leader to establish plan and the execution of the work program.
Contribute to provision of competent field crane operation services, including coaching of crane drivers where appropriate.
Maintain detailed plant knowledge for correct operation of crane and utility systems and lifting equipment container/rigging loft.
Ensure permit conditions are adhered to within Area Authority limits.
Be familiar with bulk chemical system and be competent to offload/backload or transfer bulk chemicals.
Offering advice, training and/or assistance to all member of crew.
Effectively communicating with OIM, operations team leader, HUC leader and drilling team leader. In addition maintain radio contact with captain and respond to crane signals as specified in procedures manual.
