General Summary:
Job Overview
Sensors‑based technology enables a wide range of applications, including navigation, gaming, advanced user interfaces, multimedia, and AR/VR experiences. This role offers hands‑on exposure to advanced sensor technologies used in smartphones, IoT devices, wearables, smart glasses, and other consumer electronics within the QCT Sensors Technology group.
We are seeking a hands-on Android XR Software Engineer to develop next-generation applications for AR glass form factors, enabling large-scale sensor data collection and sensors-based feature and context aware applications.
Initial focus areas are:
- Enable multi-device data collection across AR, mobile, and wearables
- Develop AR glass context aware applications for early-stage platforms
- Work with prototype hardware and evolving Android XR platforms
You will work on both early-stage hardware platforms and commercial devices, contribute to system design, and help bring innovative sensor-driven experiences from concept to commercialization.
The position spans the full product lifecycle—from research and development through validation and commercial deployment—and involves close collaboration with systems, software, and integration/test engineers within the QCT Sensors Technology group.
Job responsibilities include:
- Design, develop and test Android XR applications for AR glasses, including:
- Glass-resident applications (UI, voice prompts, sensor interaction)
- Companion Android mobile applications for control, synchronization, and data logging
- Real-time context state visualization
- Voice-driven feedback and user interaction
- Optimize applications for long-term stability, battery life and robustness in real-world environments.
- Design and implement multi-device data collection systems enabling synchronized logging across AR glasses, smartphones, and wearable devices.
- Develop scalable, production-quality applications using Kotlin/Java and Android SDK that follow industry‑standard design patterns, development methodologies, and deployment models.
- Support integration of XR, wearable and mobile application in compliance with enterprise deployment and device management concepts, such as Android Enterprise, mobile device management (MDM), and mobile application management (MAM).
- Design, implement, and test cross‑platform desktop tools with user interfaces (Windows and Linux) that interact with Android devices used for sensor data collection and user demonstrations, supporting workflows such as device control, data validation, visualization, and post‑processing, using languages such as Java, Kotlin, Python, C++, .NET, and C#.
- Develop software on prototype and reference platforms covering mobile devices, wearables, and smart‑glasses form factors
- Collaborate with global, cross‑functional teams to support the development and commercialization of sensor algorithms and features
- Contribute to the design and evolution of end‑to‑end data processing pipelines, and monitoring, troubleshooting, and optimizing data workflows in production environments
- Support internal data collection campaigns involving Qualcomm employees worldwide, including hands‑on participation in field data collection activities and resolving issues related to applications running in real-world environments on employees’ own devices
- Support sensor feature commercialization across various form factors, including algorithm performance validation, customer data analysis, and direct customer triage support
The position is technology‑focused and involves participation in a broad range of sensor systems engineering activities within the Sensors Technologies group.
The role may involve occasional travel, physical or sports‑related activities, and handling of equipment with significant weight.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field
2+ years of software engineering or related work experience in the following areas:
- Strong hands‑on experience developing Android applications using Kotlin/Java and Android SDK, preferably with Android Studio (but not limited to it)
- Proven ability to build production-quality mobile applications.
- Strong object‑oriented programming skills in Java or Kotlin, with experience on multi-threaded, system-level application development.
- Proficiency in developing system‑level applications and tools in C++ and Python for internal and customer‑facing use
- Fluency with Git and GitHub
- Ability to develop customer‑facing demo and test applications, including:
- Rapid prototyping to support internal validation, trade‑show demonstrations, and customer trials
- Delivering reliable, clear user experiences for non‑engineering audiences
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with strong written and verbal English proficiency
- Detail-oriented with strong organizational and analytical skills, with the ability to thrive in a dynamic, fast‑paced global team environment and coordinate across multiple stakeholders
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field
2+ years of experience in one or more of the following areas:
- Previous experience with Android XR, AR/VR, Wear OS or embedded Android platforms.
- Experience developing companion device systems (phone + XR/wearables).
- Familiarity with enterprise deployment and device management concepts, such as Android Enterprise, mobile device management (MDM), and mobile application management (MAM), including tools like Intune.
- Previous experience with React Native
- Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud Platform.
- Experience developing applications for prototype or pre-commercial hardware
- Ability to design UX for constrained interfaces (voice, minimal display, wearable/XR)
- Experience developing desktop applications with graphical user interfaces (GUIs)
- Ability to work effectively in a multi‑OS environment, including Linux and Windows
