Team Manager – China
Location: Xi’an, Shaanxi Province, China
Wintec is seeking an experienced education leader to provide in-country leadership for its growing transnational education portfolio across Northern China.
Based in Xi’an, this position offers an exciting opportunity to lead the delivery of innovative international education partnerships that bring together New Zealand’s applied learning expertise and the strengths of Chinese tertiary institutions.
You will oversee Wintec’s activities across three key partnerships:
- Xihang University Waikato College
- Jinzhou Medical University–Wintec Sport Rehabilitation joint programme
- Zhengzhou Preschool Education College–Wintec Music Performance joint programme
The portfolio spans multiple institutions, locations and academic disciplines, with the potential to include additional projects as Wintec’s partnerships develop.
This is a broad and rewarding leadership role combining people management, academic quality assurance, programme delivery and institutional relationship management. You will lead Wintec academic employees and contractors, a Programme Coordinator and supporting staff, ensuring they have the direction, resources and support needed to deliver high-quality learning experiences.
As Wintec’s principal operational representative across the assigned portfolio, you will work closely with Chinese partner leaders, academic teams and support staff to maintain strong working relationships and meet agreed programme requirements. You will also connect China-based teams with Wintec faculties and professional services in New Zealand, ensuring clear communication, timely problem-solving and effective coordination.
Working alongside the Jinhua-based Team Manager and reporting to the Transnational Education Manager, you will contribute to a consistent and collaborative approach across Wintec’s wider China portfolio while supporting successful student outcomes and the continued development of our international partnerships.
Key responsibilities
- Lead and support academic employees, contractors, the Programme Coordinator and supporting staff.
- Oversee programme delivery, teaching quality, academic performance and student outcomes.
- Ensure assessment, moderation, results and academic administration are completed accurately and on time.
- Monitor project plans, contractual deliverables, resources, risks and performance.
- Coordinate support from Wintec faculties, programme teams and service areas.
- Build strong relationships with partner leaders, academic teams and support staff.
- Communicate partner expectations and escalate significant issues to Wintec management.
- Support staff recruitment, induction, deployment and professional development.
- Represent Wintec at partner meetings, committees, orientations and graduations.
- Support programme review, improvement and approved new initiatives.
- Work with the Jinhua-based Team Manager to maintain consistent practices across China.
- Promote staff wellbeing and appropriate health and safety arrangements.
- Travel regularly to partner institutions and occasionally to New Zealand.
About you
You will have:
- A relevant tertiary qualification.
- Experience leading academic staff or education professionals.
- Experience managing multiple programmes, projects or delivery locations.
- Experience in transnational, international or offshore education.
- Knowledge of academic quality assurance, assessment and moderation.
- Strong institutional relationship-management and intercultural communication skills.
- Effective project management, planning, reporting and problem-solving skills.
- Experience coordinating employees, contractors and supporting staff.
- The ability to work independently across multiple locations and competing priorities.
- Strong written and spoken English.
- Competence with online collaboration and academic administration systems.
- Eligibility to live and work in China and travel regularly within the country.
Experience working with Chinese tertiary institutions and students is highly desirable. Mandarin-language capability and a postgraduate, teaching or leadership qualification would be advantageous.
