Legrand has an exciting opportunity for a Sustaining Engineering Manager to join the Audio Video Division in Shenzhen, China.
This position leads engineering change activity (ECOs) and design modifications to support manufacturing efficiency, component obsolescence management, product compatibility, quality improvement, and customer-driven engineered solutions. While based in Shenzhen, the role works closely with U.S.-based Product Development, Operations, Quality, and Sourcing teams, as well as directly with contract manufacturing (CM) engineering teams. Design changes are developed locally and recommended for approval through U.S.-based governance.
This role is ideal for an experienced mechanical engineer who enjoys hands-on execution, cross-functional problem solving, and helping establish and mature sustaining engineering practices in a global product organization.
What Will You Do?
The Sustaining Engineering Manager is a hands-on technical leader responsible for sustaining, improving, and extending the lifecycle of released products within our Display Infrastructure (mounts) portfolio. - Create, analyze, and document Engineering Change Orders (ECOs), including problem definition, root-cause analysis, solution development, validation, and implementation support.
- Develop and recommend design modifications to address component obsolescence, supplier changes, manufacturing improvements, quality issues, regulatory requirements, and product compatibility.
- Own post-launch Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) improvements in collaboration with manufacturing partners.
- Support customer-specific configurations and engineered solutions while maintaining alignment with product intent and manufacturing capability.
- Review, update, and create mechanical CAD models, drawings, specifications, and bills of materials.
- Perform engineering analysis as needed, including tolerance analysis and basic structural or thermal assessments; finite element analysis (FEA) experience is desirable but not required.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Act as the primary sustaining engineering interface between the Shenzhen team, contract manufacturers, and U.S.-based Product Development, Quality, Sourcing, and Operations teams.
- Communicate technical issues, proposed solutions, risks, and tradeoffs clearly and concisely in written English; participate in regular meetings across time zones.
- Work directly with CM engineering teams to investigate production issues, yield challenges, and quality concerns, recommending corrective actions.
- Support supplier-driven changes and secondary source qualifications in coordination with sourcing and quality partners.
Team Leadership & Process Development
- Provide hands-on technical leadership, mentoring, and task-level guidance to sustaining engineers and drafting resources.
- Balance individual engineering execution with review and coaching of team deliverables to ensure technical accuracy and completeness.
- Help define, document, and continuously improve sustaining engineering processes, including ECO workflows, documentation standards, and cross-site handoffs.
- Encourage disciplined engineering practices, structured problem solving, and clear technical documentation.
